"Forbidden Planet was a winner"

Everyone involved in "Return To The Forbidden Planet" last September knew that it was a spectacular production, and this was confirmed at the Leeds Civic Arts Guild's award ceremony held on the 3rd of September at the Carriageworks Theatre in Leeds.

The show was nominated in two categories for Best Musical and Best Visual Presentation. Members were delighted when it was announced that we were awarded Best Visual Presentation, but unfortunately we missed out on Best Musical. Two of the cast were also nominated for Best Performance in a Musical (Stuart Marshall and Joanne Cooke).

Three of our young members were nominated for the Tony Hoyland Youth award (Beth Lancaster, Ashley Young and Matthew Lee) and Matthew was speechless when he went up on stage to collect his award.

"Morley Town Hall Stage Refurbishment"

For many years now MAOS have been "asking for more" with regards to the onstage facilities in the Alexandra Hall at Morley Town Hall.

Over the last year or so, MAOS Chairman (Geoff Snowden) and Business Manager (Steven Holt) have attended various meetings to identify ways of improving the stage facilities for everyone that uses the hall.
Steven made an application for funding from Leeds City Council's Well-Being Fund. The Well-being funding is awarded by local Ward Members through the Outer South Area Committee and we would like to thank all the members of the Outer South Committee for supporting the application.

The present stage extension and the aluminium proscenium arch were installed over 30 years ago by MAOS and we have maintained and updated the structure ever since.

The stage extension has now been strengthened and a brand new stage floor has been laid and will be used for the first time in our production of Oliver!.

Over the coming weeks stage lighting equipment and replacement curtains and drapes are scheduled to be fitted, which will make the hall a much more attractive venue for performers and audience alike.

The improvements will make a huge difference to all events held here, including the Morley Literature Festival, Morley Festival of Remembrance, MAOS shows and pantomimes, brass band concerts, local school and dance groups and various other ad hoc events.

The Well-being funding has covered the majority of the costs, but MAOS have contributed a further £3000, Land Securities Group plc (White Rose Centre) has awarded £1000 from their ARISE fund and Morley Town Council has awarded £950 towards the project.

MAOS would like to thank particularly Councillors Bob Gettings and Robert Finnigan for their ongoing support in recognising the benefits of the refurbishment to the local community, and the potential of attracting a much wider range of performers and events in future.
